Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday condoled the demise of 17 safety personnel who had been ambushed in a Maoist assault in Sukma district of Chhattisgarh.
A minimum of 17 troopers had been killed and 14 others injured within the assault on Saturday.
“I’m deeply anguished by the demise of safety personnel in Sukma. I provide my respects to the courageous jawans who laid their lives in safety of the nation,” Mr Singh stated in a tweet in Hindi.
In a significant joint offensive on Saturday, separate groups of almost 600 personnel belonging to the District Reserve Guard (DRG), Particular Job Pressure (STF) and Commando Battalion for Resolute Motion (CoBRA) launched an anti-Maoist operation from three sides in direction of Elmagunda after getting inputs about an enormous gathering of ultras there.
When the patrolling groups had been close to Minpa village forests, a gaggle of round 250 closely armed Maoists ambushed them.
